Surveying Fundamentals and Practices

Title: Surveying Fundamentals and Practices
Authors: Jerry A. Nathanson, Michael T. Lanzafama; Philip Kissam
Abstract: Surveying Fundamentals and Practices is an

introductory textbook for use in colleges or tech-
nical schools where a basic but practical approach

to surveying is desired. It is of value primarily to students
in civil and civil/construction technology programs.

Surveying with Construction Applications

Title: Surveying with Construction Applications
Authors: Barry F. Kavanagh, Dianne K. Slattery
Abstract: Many technological advances have occurred in surveying since Surveying with Construction
Applications was first published. This eighth edition is updated with the latest advances in
instrumentation technology, field-data capture, and data-processing techniques. Although

surveying is becoming much more efficient and automated, the need for a clear under-
standing of the principles underlying all forms of survey measurement remains unchanged.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Title: ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Authors: ROBERT D. HISRICH, MICHAEL P. PETERS, PhD; DEAN A. SHEPHERD, PhD
Abstract: Starting and operating a new business involves considerable risk and effort to overcome
the inertia against creating something new. In creating and growing a new venture, the
entrepreneur assumes the responsibility and risks for its development and survival and
enjoys the corresponding rewards. This risk is compounded for entrepreneurs who go
international or who are in fact born global. The fact that consumers, businesspeople, and
government officials from every part of the world are interested in entrepreneurship is
evident from the increasing research on the subject, the large number of courses and
seminars on the topic, the more than two million new enterprises started each year (despite
a 70% failure rate), the significant coverage and focus by the media, and the realization
that this is an important aspect of the economics of the developed, developing, and even
controlled economies.
Who is the focus of all this attention? Who is willing to accept all the risks and put forth
the effort necessary to create a new venture? It may be a man or a woman, someone from
an upper-class or lower-class background, a technologist or someone lacking technological
sophistication, a college graduate, or a high school dropout. The person may be an investor,
manager, nurse, salesperson, engineer, student, teacher, homemaker, or retiree. It is always
someone able to juggle work, family, and civic responsibilities while meeting payroll.
To provide an understanding of this person and the process of creating and growing a
new venture on an international basis, this 9th edition of Entrepreneurship is divided into
five major sections.

Structural Fire Engineering

Title: Structural Fire Engineering
Authors: Tom Lennon
Abstract: Structural fire engineering, as a recognised discipline, is still in its
infancy. Great progress has been made in recent decades, in
furthering our understanding of material behaviour in fire and of
the interactions between structural elements that occur during a
f
ire. Much of our current understanding has arisen as a
consequence of structural engineers coming to terms with the
transient conditions associated with a fire, and fire scientists
appreciating the crucial role that structural integrity plays in
ensuring safe access routes for building occupants and fire
f
ighters.
The Building Regulations Approved Document B provides a
performance-based regulatory framework for the fire safety of
buildings which allows for alternative fire engineering methods
as a means of satisfying the mandatory functional requirements.
To take full advantage of the opportunities provided by this
f
lexible approach to regulation, the expertise of the fire scientist
must be combined with that of the structural engineer so that a
holistic approach can be made to the design of buildings for fire.
Such an interdisciplinary approach is essential to the efficient
implementation of the current generation of national and
European fire standards for structures.
It is hoped that this book will go some way towards
demystifying the subject of structural fire engineering and
encouraging performance-based approaches to design that,
where appropriate, go beyond the limitations of current methods
of test and assessment.
The views expressed are those of the author and do not
necessarily reflect those of his current employer.
