Authors: Zarina Ashikin Zakaria; Normazla Ahmad Mahir; Norhaili Massari
Abstract: Hybrid learning has been a common choice of teaching and learning method since the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Most schools and higher education institutions all over the world opted for Hybrid learning. Now that the pandemic has subsided, many still decide to continue using Hybrid learning. Hybrid learning combines both online and face-to-face learning. Among the objectives of this study are to identify the challenges that students faced in Hybrid learning as well as to discover some alternatives to improve Hybrid learning in USIM. A questionnaire was distributed to 74 USIM undergraduates. Various positive and interesting responses received from the survey conducted in order to learn the students’ insights of Hybrid learning in USIM. It is hoped that some of the weaknesses highlighted will be given attention and improvement for the betterment of Hybrid learning in USIM in the future.

Authors: Aditia Muara Padiatra; Faruk; Dian Arymami
Abstract: This study presents a systematic literature review of several literatures that examine the position of comics as a medium for social criticism in a contemporary context. Through the Systematic
Literature Review (SLR) approach, this study examines the construction of discourse, visual forms, and production dynamics inherent in comic works, both in editorial strip formats, graphic novels,
and digital platforms. The results of the review show that comics are not only a symbolic articulation space for social inequality, power, and representational politics, but also act as an arena for negotiation between creative expression and the institutional structure of the media. The literature analyzed is mapped into five main thematic clusters: (1) Comics as a Medium for Social
and Political Criticism (2) Social Representation in Indonesian Comic Strips: Symbols, Figures, and Criticism, (3) Visual Structure, Multimodality, and Comic Language, (4) History, Historiography, and Development of Comics, and (5) Media Production, Editorial, and Censorship. This study also identifies conceptual gaps that have not been widely touched upon, especially related to aspects of critical studies in reading comics, systematic multimodal approaches, and intersectional representation. These findings are expected to be a conceptual contribution in the development of studies of visual culture, popular media, and representation in the Indonesian comic landscape.

Authors: Guo, Wentao; Zhang, Mengqi
Abstract: “Continuation Theory”, an innovative language learning framework rooted in the “alignment effect”, leverages incomplete discourse within contextualized settings to prompt learners to produce creative completions. This theory has gained growing recognition and pedagogical adoption among Chinese scholars; one of its direct applications lies in advancing second language (L2) acquisition and enhancing the efficiency of L2 instruction. This paper centers on the “reading-then-writing” approach, aiming to explore a novel college English writing pedagogy guided by Continuation Theory. Through empirical experimentation, this study demonstrates that, in application-oriented universities, strengthening the synergistic interplay between instructional materials, teaching methodologies, and teachers’ multi-tiered scaffolding can optimize the efficacy of reading-then-writing tasks—ultimately elevating the accuracy and linguistic sophistication of students’ written output.

Authors: Arshad SMBM; Khilola Mamatova; Utapova Oysapar
Abstract: Needless to say, several factors, such as cultural changes, technical development, mass media, and web-based social platforms, have always changed English. Consequent upgrades in the digital age made Gen Zs and Gen Alphaers reshape English with major changes. The unique characteristics of contemporary generations’ English—including slang and abbreviations (LOL, BRB, GOAT), emojis and GIFs as nonverbal communications, the impact of internet culture and memes, and spelling and grammar in digital discourse are investigated in this study. Particularly, while these changes in the informal context indicate expressiveness and efficiency in communication, the very changes are not considered suitable for professional and intergenerational communication. Certain academicians and linguists believe that some of these language changes might fade away over time while others could remain in use among the generations to come. Language teachers, linguists, and academicians should learn the emergence patterns of English so that they can both understand what this generation’s population speaks and resolve problems that may arise in the at tempt to prevent the language.
