Abstract: This paper shows a new low-cost technology for the measurement of crack propagation in quasi-fragile materials based on a stereo pair of cameras and LED light spots. The two cameras record the displacement experienced by a series of LED white lights. For each frame, the X, Y and Z 3D coordinates of all the centroids of the LED points are obtained. From this information, it is possible to determine the variation of the distance between any two of them. In this case, 2 strips of 12 LED lights each were arranged in such a way that the points of both strips coincided in pairs in height. The algorithm made it possible to monitor the increase in distance that occurred between each pair of lights at the same height. The paper shows the mathematical basis of this technological solution. A test has been carried out by installing this system in a concrete cube 150 mm side and subjected to a wedge-splitting test. The results show that it is possible to monitor the crack propagation (position of the crack front) during the test and to know the crack width too. At present, the accuracy of this technique is only limited by the camera resolution and the computer processing capability.</summary>

Authors: Zhang, Xumei; Yu, Jiaxuan; Yan, Wei; Wang, Yan; Nachiappan Subramanian
Abstract: Reverse logistics (RL) of automobiles has received wide attention in recent years with the innovation of resource utilization and the increase of environmental awareness. Many research papers have been published in the RL discipline focusing on the automotive industry. However, no review article is available on product-specific issues. To bridge this gap, 91 papers published in the Web of Science (WOS) database between January 2013 and March 2023 were selected and analyzed using content analysis to classify the articles into survey, evaluation, decision making, framework, modeling and review. The main findings of this paper are as follows: (1) Research on RL activities has mainly focused on recycling and remanufacturing, and insufficient research has been conducted on activities such as dismantling and waste management. (2) In terms of research objects, End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) and automotive batteries have received a lot of attention, while less research has been done on automotive tires, engines, waste oil, etc., which need further attention. (3) Integrated economic, environmental and social considerations are research opportunities for future evaluation and decision making. (4) The establishment of multi-objective problems and the innovation of solution methods may be the future research direction. (5) Green and sustainability themes are the main trends in the development of RL in the automotive industry in the future.</summary>

Authors: Lieskovský, Juraj; Akahane, Hijiri; Osawa, Aoto; Bušek, Jaroslav; Ikuo, Mizuuchi; Vyhlídal, Tomáš
Abstract: A complete mechatronic design of a minimal configuration brachiation robot is presented. The robot consists of a single rigid rod with gripper mechanisms attached to both ends. The grippers are used to hang the robot on a horizontal bar on which it swings or rotates. The motion is imposed by repositioning the robot’s center of mass, which is performed using a crank-slide mechanism. Based on a nonlinear model, an optimal control strategy is proposed, for repositioning the center of mass in a bang-bang manner. Consequently, utilizing the concept of input–output linearization, a continuous control strategy is proposed that takes into account the limited torque of the crank-slide mechanism and its geometry. An increased attention is paid to energy accumulation towards the subsequent jump stage of the brachiation. These two strategies are validated and compared in simulations. The continuous control strategy is then also implemented within a low-cost STM32-based control system, and both the swing and rotation stages of the brachiation motion are experimentally validated.</summary>

Authors: Farioli, Daniele; Fabrizio, Matteo; Kaya, Ertuğrul; Strano, Matteo; Mussi, Valerio
Abstract: Approximately half of global steel production is dedicated for manufacturing sheets. Due to global warming, geopolitical instabilities and rising raw material costs, recycling sheet metal is increasingly important. Conventional recycling has inefficiencies, therefore improving material efficiency and adopting circular economy strategies is necessary to halve CO2 emissions by 2050. This paper presents a review of sheet metal reuse techniques and introduces an innovative remanufacturing framework of curved steel sheets, with a special focus on the automotive sector and car-body panels. To support the framework presented, an experimental procedure on small-scale samples was carried out. The material tested was DC 0.4 steel parts (0.8 mm thick) characterized by different curvature radii. The material was reshaped and flattened under different conditions to understand the effect of the process variables on to the final quality of the remanufactured parts. The experiments showed that even parts with small curvatures can be flattened and reshaped with success. Lastly, to support the general remanufacturing framework presented, some flattening simulations of a large car-body are presented, revealing the importance of implementing a dwelling stage in the process and the advantage of performing such process with heated tools.</summary>
